What to listen to if you are infected with popular disease 'COVID-19'

 Like most people on this planet, I recently became infected with smash hit disease 'COVID-19.' In between slurping on tasteless cups of soup and shivering, I found that I had a lot of time in prison isolation to listen to some fun and exciting new things. So naturally, I played the same three Steve Hauschildt albums on repeat.

However! That doesn't make for a good blog post! And this ol' thing has not been updated since... 2018?! Time to get to work.

Cosmic Foxhole presents...

~What to listen to if you are infected with popular disease 'COVID-19'~

1. In Amber by Hercules and Love Affair

You might remember Hercules and Love Affair from their catchy collaboration with Anohni back in the day, singing exuberant disco songs about... turning blind? Well, forget that. Anohni is still there, but they're full of goth rage now. There are lots of songs about being disappointed with religious institutions, and why not have some melancholic f-slur, as a treat. Makes sense that this album is the perfect soundtrack for that little window of time where you gasp for air between coughing. YOLO never sounded scarier!

2. Aerial by Kate Bush

So apparently Ms. KB is 'having a moment' thanks to her (admittedly excellent) song 'Running Up That Hill' being featured in Stranger Things. But, target audience, you have COVID-19! And after struggling through one SEVENTY MINUTE EPISODE, you decided that maybe you should stick to the sustainable eleven minutes of wholesome queer cartoon Steven Universe. Then you can retire to bed for your sixtieth nap of the day, awash with the pastel watercolour sounds of Kate Bush's 2005 gem 'Aerial-' a true daydream of an album.

Favourite moments here are 'Pi,' where she sings the digits of pi, and 'Mrs. Bartolozzi,' where she sings about doing laundry. ... I promise this is a real and good album and not a joke.

3. Misc. songs by Sam Amidon

It's day 5 of your infection and you thought you were feeling better on day 4 but now you feel worse. You struggle to remember what day of the week it is. You struggle to remember the names of your primary schoolmates' dads, and then you wonder why you're even thinking about that. You have a fever dream where Hayden Christensen tells you that he invented popcorn at his same-sex marriage. You start to wonder whether it's going to be this wild next time you catch covid, and then spiral into despair when you realise there will definitely be a next time and this disease is never going away and the world is ruined forever. Anyway, Sam Amidon's gentle Kermit voice is a great end of days soundtrack!

The end. Hopefully it won't take a plague to get me to write here again? p.s. those three Steve Hauschildt albums are REALLY GOOD: Check out Strands, Nonlin and Where All Is Fled ✌

Yours infected,

Peep Your Sleep

If you ask a normal what they spend most of their time doing, they'll probably say something like "work" or "moving, nourishing, believing," but I'm here to tell you that really it is SLEEPING. I'm a regular snoozin' boyle. In the words of wolfpupy, "I hit the hay all day." But what does this have to do with the music-centric focus of this fantastic blog?

Because I live in the political and geographical hellscape that is Australia, I have gotten used to sleeping with a fan on over the summer season. Unfortunately, this means that now that it is starting to cool down a bit, I find it hard to snooze without that breezy white noise in the background. Silence is scary.

As a result, I present to you- my favourite things to play from tiny phone speakers at a volume of 1 as when you're trying to snooze because it is too cold to turn on your shitty Big W fan!:

Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2 by Aphex Twin
Duh. Pros are that it is very long, so it might outlast your insomnia if you are having one of those nights where you keep thinking about the things you need to do at work tomorrow. Cons are that while parts of it are v beautiful, some are downright eerie and may cause you to think there is an invisible demon standing over you RIGHT NOW. 7 zzzzzzz's out of 10

actual photo of the musician responsible

Kid A by Radiohead
An oldie but a goodie. Pros are that it is relatively gentle to begin with so will work well if you are quick to snooze. Cons- there are a few cacophonous bits (The National Anthem, Idiotheque) that might rouse you, personal con for me is that my partner can't stand it and has terrible nightmares if I put it on. YMMV! 3 zzz's out of 10

The Fall Into Time by Oneohtrix Point Never
I have this one permanently available offline in my spotify account because it's my go-to drowsing music for travel. Combine with some noise-cancelling headphones for a v surreal transit experience. Possibly just one of my straight-up fave ambient albums ever, v. soothing and vaguely sci-fi without being eerie or downbeat. No cons try it yourself tonight! 10 zzzzzzzzzz's out of 10!

i also love this album cover

Cover the Windows and the Walls By Grouper
Basically witch music- sad lady with reverb turned to six million and ten. If you are easily spooked probs won't work for you as a snoozelisten. This is my personal favourite Grouper album though and it works well for me! It has probably fallen out of rotation in my sleep listening because of the strong efforts of Oneohtrix and Max Richter though. 6 zzzzzz's out of 10.

Sleep by Max Richter
Surprise- this album is called sleep and it is good to sleep to. Slightly more vocal/choral?-based than the others in this list, so if you're feeling a bit plagal hit this one for your sleep cycle. It goes for eight hours, which is about the amount of time you're meant to sleep, right? I don't know what much more I can say on this one. You'll need to make sure your phone is charging so it doesn't drain your battery overnight!, and good luck if you're in a place where you don't have wifi and need to stream it. Also a fun surprise if you can catch the end of it in the morning when you wake up. 8 zzzzzzzz's out of 10.

Happy snoozing!

Good Things You Might Not Have Listened To

Hey, it's me, your favourite music author since Pitchfork got bought by Conde Nast! Just remember, I'm still a garbage writer and I'm not above publishing a shitty listicle.

And that's what I've done here- I'm generously providing a brief write-up of three things that are good that I suspect you may not have heard of! Please know that this is coming from a "nobody has ever talked about this music to me" place, not a "I'm a snob who knows all these cool underground musicians" place. Even tho I am and I do*
*or did, when I was younger and didn't spend 90% of my spare time being abused by adult men in Overwatch

Presenting, THREE GOOD THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE LISTENED TO:

1. HOLY GHOST!

In the mid naughties this whole dance-punk thing was taking off, due in part largely to the success of The Rapture and their six hundred billion contemporaries. However, that's also when skinny jeans were just coming back in to fashion and people dyed their hair black and were too cool to dance in public? Is that trend dead yet? ANYWAY It's a shame/blessing that Holy Ghost!'s first album came after that wave- in 2011. Much like The Rapture by that point, they threw off the punky shrieking and went in for straight-up New Order style pop. But, it's all really good. Their self-titled debut is especially good- stand out tracks include "Jam for Jerry", "Do it Again" and "It's Not Over."

Here's a good taster, the song "Wait and See", dive on in:

2. REBECCA FERGUSON

If you are from the UK this may be a surprise inclusion because I think she was a runner-up on X Factor or something over there so maybe she's not that unknown? I don't know and I don't care- her first album Heaven is really, really good. She's a "soul" pop singer in the vein of Adele, so if you're interesting in giving your life a Bridget Jones rom-com style soundtrack, get on to it. Here's the anthemic album closer, "You're Too Good To Lose:"

3. JUNIOR BOYS, sort of

Okay, most people know the Junior Boys because of their ripper album "So This is Goodbye." But, that came out FOURTEEN YEARS AGO. They released an album in 2016 called Big Black Coat which is so grouse it hurts. It's pretty moody so they've obviously embraced Canadian #gothlife- for egg the song "Over It" includes the happy phrase "it's better if you have a single bed." I just really love that futuristic "cyberpunk anime" synth sound that they've perfected over the years. Listen to Junior Boys BIG BLACK COAT go go go the outro in this song "C'mon Baby" is THE BEST

The end see you in another ___ months!

What is 2016? Baby, Don't Hurt Me

Well, here we are in December. There are a lot of memes about what an awful year it's been across the globe, but I personally haven't had The Worst Year Of My Life. I mean, it was pretty terrible that David Bowie surprise-died and I'm still not prepared to write anything about Blackstar but that's why the Ancient Romans invented wine*

it really hasn't been, tho

What music even came out in 2016? It's been one of the least exciting years for music that I can recall. Thanks to streaming services and some life stability in my increasingly advanced age (previously discussed here) it's hard to tell what was actually released when. How embarassing, For It Is True!: I had to do some careful and considered research on popular internet website "wikipedia" to assemble my completely unecessary best of 2016 write-up.

Firstly,

This Year's Let-Downs

~Where My Own Huge Expectations Are Not Met, But That's The Artists' Fault~

The Life of Pablo by Kanye West: Look, I know this album is still good, and probably quite popular, but I was hoping for him to go further down the path he stomped down in Yeezus. Instead he sort of jumped in to the flowerbed and made a sub-par sequel to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Hopefully a) Kanye is OK and b) Trump's America pushes him in to the weird again.

this picture of junk is more exciting than M83's album
Junk by M83: The first couple of songs are fantastic, which makes the subsequent beige soundblob all the more disappointing.

(I'd like to point out that at this point I stopped typing to casually floss my teeth. I told you, I'm turning into a double-J-listening responsible adult.)

The Bride by Bat for Lashes: I'm still pro Natasha Khan, but whichever record label executive indulged her in this concept album with the thinnest premise in the world made a horrible mistake. Track one, "Oh! A bride is mega excited to get married yay!" Track two, "Oh no, groom has horrible and prophetic dream of his own death!" Tracks three to twelve, bride sooks because groom is dead. That's the whole album. There's even a spoken word piece of very questionable quality.

Albums That Were Good But Not Great

actual lyrics from "Bird Song" by M.I.A.
~These may have lasted like, a month in my car~

AIM by M.I.A.: The video for "Borders" was fantastic and lifted my expectations for the album to drop. "Finally" is one of the greatest songs she has even done, but, "Bird Song" is undeniably the worst.

Boy King by Wild Beasts: I actually really enjoyed this album! Big Cat, Alpha Female and Get My Bang are all great sing-alongs. I just wished they did more of their dual-vocalist tornadoes as seen on the prior three albums.

Wildflower by The Avalanches: For me, this felt too much like a revolving door circus of guest artists than a good, solid album from some genuine o.g. gamechangers. Pleasant listening, but how could they ever follow up Since I Left You, really?

A Small Selection Of Stand-out Tracks

~Where I either didn't listen to the album or didn't care for it~

  • All Night by Chance the Rapper, because I don't have time for gospel nonsense
  • Hold Up, Sorry and Formation by Beyonce. I might be the only person in the world that doesn't care for Don't Hurt Yourself, and the ballads on her self-titled are better than the ones that appeared here.
  • FloriDada by Animal Collective. Everyone gave up on them after Centipede Hz (quite rightly,) but this song is great.

Home Runs

~Really Great Albums if I'm Completely Hair-nest~

HOPELESSNESS by Anohni. I got to see her perform this live at the Sydney Opera House, and it was fantastic. A completely terrifying and cynical look at .,;xmodern.societyx;,. Fully endorsed by renowned supermodel Naomi Campbell (see below). Best moments are "4 Degrees," "Watch Me," "Crisis," "Drone Bomb Me." Give it a listen, ya mug.

Hills End by DMA's. I already wrote about this album here. Unlike slurring rubbish a la The Smith Street Band or Camp Cope, these guys help me keep faith in Australian rock music. (Though I will admit I'm keen on a sneaky Violent Soho song here and there, in the interest of being a massive hypocrite)

The Colour in Anything by James Blake. This took me a while to get in to. It's a pretty long album, but with repeat listens it all reveals itself as quite varied and detailed. Got that good gloomy rainy night mood, and "Timeless" employs the best use of caralarm.wav I've ever heard. I'd also like to mention that James Blake and Kanye West songs are the only times it's appropriate to bring out the perpetually formless Bon Iver.

Atrocity Exhibition by Danny Brown. This is some bonkers stuff. Demonic swamp rap with the most nasal voice since Brian Molko. When I told one of my teenage students I loved Danny Brown's album, he Spoke For The Masses and said, "I think I just can't stand his voice, sir." #YourMileageMayVary- dance in the water and not get wet.

My Favourite Album of 2016: Blond by Frank Ocean

~I can't believe anyone bothers to read all this~

I really stewed for a while about what my #AOTY was going to be. But based on play count and staying power alone, it has to be Blond.

I have to say, this album makes a terrible first impression. "Nikes" floats in with pitch-shifted vocals and without much to prove. It hangs around for a long five minutes without really going anywhere. The next track, "Ivy," pops in and walks through the speakers with no percussion whatsoever. By the time we hit the equally ambling "Pink + White," it's clear that Frank isn't in a hurry. I really didn't like it at first, I gotta say.

It wasn't until I perservered and gave it a few listens that the album really opened up to me. The way "Self Control" evolves from fireside crooning to ethereal hymn should be enough to make Justin Vernon give up and look for a job as a plumber,  and "Nights" perfectly captures somehow both a sense of apathy and stressed-out paranoia. Plus, unlike some other contemporaries, Frank can earnestly deliver lines like "did you call me from a seance, you are from my past life" without them sounding like terrible puns. At one point Andre 3000 delivers arguably the best verse of the year on "Solo (Reprise)."

It's not a perfect album- there are some terrible skits, but none of them are too long, and the songs more than make up for it. There's a real sense of mythology to uncover in the stories told on here, too. Much was made of Frank's coming out circa Channel Orange, and I do have to wonder if the title "Blond" was chosen due to it being one of the few words in english that desperately clings to gender.

Overall, Blond is a pastel-coloured daydream that's played through many of my Saturday afternoons this year. If you haven't given it a go, I heartily recommend.

Now, bring on 2017!

*I fact-checked this, but the history of wine is far too confusing for me to correct my outrageous and false claim

Views (aka CDs) from the Six (aka my Car)

I was sipping on Schweppes Natural Peach Infused Mineral Water No Sugar (which I'm sure has been invented solely for people with mild hangovers) when I decided to dive back into The Cosmic Foxhole for my dearest readers. How are you all? That's great whatever.

Here are some CDs I have been spinning in my car, Gorgonzola. I've been playing CDs in my car because I've reached the age and/or mindset where popular youth radio station Triple J makes me furious. "Aussie hip hop!?" I yell at the radio. "Why are they talking so much shit? Just play a damn song!" I'm pretty sure the other day I even said, out loud, "Why can't these people go to a music festival and just be sober?" My youth is over. RIP.

1. Hills End by DMA's
This album is pretty good! I bought it on a whim after enjoying opening track "Timeless." If I was going to look at this picture of the band without knowing what they sound like, I would assume they play bad bogan garage rock or Aussie Hip-Hop, BUT,  the genre is actually jangly Australia-does-britpop, and
it's done well. When I play it while I'm wearing a flannel shirt and sunglasses I pretend I'm the protagonist of a cool young adult coming of age film, which is basically my life anyway.

8 Bildungsromans out of 10

2. Nonagon Infinity by King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard
I'm certain these guys have been smoking too many drug cigarettes, and not only because they decided to call their band "King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard." This album could be the soundtrack to a Power Rangers boss battle set in the 1970s. Despite being chopped up in to 9 tracks, it's more or less one long "suite" that is meant to be looped- the end of the last song lines up perfectly with the beginning of the first song. It's a fun listen! Surprise harmonica solos! Lifestyles of the Riffs and Famous! Never loud enough! Something something Black Sabbath! And also, what the shit:

7 Terrible Band Names out of 10

3. Endtroducing... by DJ Shadow
Because of the aforementioned death of my youth, I have been listening to digital radio station "Double J" aka "Old Person Triple J" inside of my house. Every week they feature a "classic album" from the past, because old people like me hate new things. Recently, they featured DJ Shadow's 1996 album Endtroducing..., so I put my copy in the car to revisit it there. For those of you that don't know of it, Endtroducing is reportedly one of the earliest albums that was made from samples. Unlike the more famous (?) Avalanches effort from 2001, it's a bit dark and moody, and more about the percussion than melodies.

I was kind of surprised to find that Endtroducing wasn't as engaging as I recall it being. The "slow build to a double-time-section" song format seems dated now, the interludes are jarring and awkward, and most of it just kind of meanders. Great mood music, but not the fantastic piece of history I remember it being.

Bag Hurl RiRi

I don't really have a Rihanna story, and I'm still unsure if she's actually Good. I just reallyreally seem to enjoy a lot more of her discography than a normal person should. And now she's back in black for he eighth(!) album, "ANTI," looking like an extra from The Matrix. We can tell she's being a Serious Artist for this one because of the A3 "poem" included in the packaging, as well as all the sketchy "polaroids" of Rihanna staring at a wall with blindfolds on. Seriously, what is she trying to be???

Halfway through the very first track, the beat stops and she proclaims "Let me cover your shit in glitter, I can make it gold." It seems like pretty standard Rihanna fare, all haughts and crosses, but she dials up that accent and throws in some 90s trip hop beats and it almost sounds like a secret track on Massive Attack's Protection. I was pretty sold on the album at this point y'guys, even if it is just glitter-covered excrement.

What follows is arguably the first Rihanna album that you'd be better off listening to on your headphones rather than blasting through the living room while you fold your laundry. The songs are insular and domestic and not really "for the clubz." There is an inexplicable and pretty faithful Tame Impala cover and not one but three romantic/pornographic slow jams at the end. I'm a pretty big fan of the lead single 'Work," where she turns the title into a weird mantra that just devolves into gibberish.  Underneath it is a beat that never quite takes off- the tension of it works pretty well, I think. At one point Drake shows up, but he actually doesn't add a lot here. RIP Drake guest spots. Maybe now I can write a blog post without having to mention Drake.

The only real clunker is "Woo," a wannabe Portishead/Weeknd noise thing that goes nowhere and does nothing interesting. Does it also have the worst song title in pop history? Yes. And that's including "Laffy Taffy" by D4L. She also insists on employing those cheesy electric guitar wails, here heard in "Kiss It Better" and in the past all over "Rated R."

I gotta say, I find that Rihanna is an interesting lady. There's definitely a "no fucks given" vibe, but who can really tell how foreals it is? I feel like I want to hear her songs and laugh at all her throw-a-phone-in-the-air-off-a-yacht-to-shoot-it-out-of-the-sky personas, but if I go too far down the path of knowing Who She Really Is it will ruin everything. When Miranda July interviewed her, the most interesting story came out of her conversations with the driver there and back. Maybe that's why the album is called Anti- to care about what she has to say is kind of missing the point.

Standout tracks: Consideration, Work, Desperado, Yeah I Said It

On Choosing Our Form- How Is It Chosen?

Like every human in the universe*, I too love Drake's "Hotline Bling." But my gosh! It's a different world since I last wrote about Drizzy!
There's a new prime minister! Rihanna is finally dropping another album! There is going to be a Pina Bausch production in Adelaide! Why is it happening in Adelaide? Who even goes to Adelaide.

Adelaide: 0 out of 10

The real winner from Drake's latest ridiculous feud? album? was Ms. Erykah "She ILL" Badu, because she covered/remixed this hit and it is Thoroughly grouse. Listen:

#thoroughlygrouse
I find that thing Soundcloud does with the comments as the song plays pretty entertaining tbh. My faves from just now: "wtf is this shit" "this is shit why can't you post the original song wtf" "iz lit" "no :-/"
The internet, what a discerning place!

The internet comments on this thoroughly grouse cover: 2/10

Possibly even better than the internet (jk, the internet is a precious and beautiful gift from the eLords) is this NEW Missy Misdemeanor Elliott song! Oh my god oh my gosh. I know, it is exciting, but don't get too excited, because at one point in the song Missy disappears and Pharrell, um, raps.
I myself now want a mirror ball hoodie, if only to prompt self-evaluation in others by providing startling glimpses of their disconnected image as I stroll past.

The new MSE song gets:
~14 Mirrors-To-The-World out of 10~

And finally, in the interest of once again reminding my readers that I'm a dweeby white dude, I have FINALLY gotten the latest Joanna Newsom album after some drama with a sketchy Australian record label delaying it for three weeks.

Joanna Newsom is a Harp Angel who uses words like "simulacreage, "obsolescence," and "the" in her literature novels lyrics. The carefully "arranged" songs are often longer than The Bus Ride to Sydney and very emotionally moving. Honestly, it's all a bit #wanky, and yet still #thoroughlygrouse. The album itself is quite good, with songs about Death, Time, Leaving Various Places, and War. But sometimes I'm listenin', toe-tappin', trying to make Shaman work in Hearthstonin', and I'm all "maybe Joanna needs to just cool it with the heavy prose and release an album of fun parody songs a la Weird Al Yankovic?" He seems pretty successful Jo. Give it a go! It can't be that fun to hang out in weird cloudscapes all the time, shrieking questions about how we choose our "form."

How indeed? "Divers" by JoNew gets Really Makes You Think out of 10.

It is nearly the end of the year, which means that the next post will probably be uninteresting list of my "AOTY"! and "FAVES LOL!"
I bet you all* can't wait for that!

See Dese CDs

Hi2u. It's me, Your Favourite Author. If I was a root vegetable, I'd be a commentatoe because I'm about to make some comments.

Did you know that I'm one of Those People that still purchases CDs? This will be a succint and well-structured thinkpiece about why, and The State of Music Consumption. It will include scathing criticism on Spotify and Apple Music, with carefully selected quotes from Lily Allen and Taylor Swift to both elucidate and enunciate my points.

JK LOL. (Just Kidding, Laugh Out Loud).

But yeah, I do still buy CDs. In fact, after recently binging at my Local Used Records Shop I came home to realise I accidentally now have two copies of Usher's "Confessions."

sorry raymond

"Tell 'em Snoop, Tell 'em like it is!" - Robyn

So I'll write what I always write about!: Thing I've been listening to and enjoying. This will be more useful to you, Deer Eater, than just another lump of text about why someone will only listen to FLAC or Original Pressed vinyl because they Have Respect For Artists are white and wealthy want to look like they give a shit.

Even the cover art is ambiguous- what is Miguel really saying?
Wildheart by Miguel. This guy is basically Prince. "Nobody can be Prince," said a pal after I told him so. I was like, w/e, it's an oversexed black guy singing in falsetto, they're a dime a dozen. This album is really good though, don't get me wrong. Of all the Prince Imposters out there, Miguel is possibly the bestest. There are songs on the album about sex, Los Angeles sex, flesh, and "Hollywood dreams." One of the songs was originally released as a single called "Coffee (Fucking)," which is incredible. For some reason, the (Fucking) got dropped off on the actual album, so it's now a bit more subtle that the song is about fucking. There is genuine ambiguity- is the song about coffee or sex? Especially in the outro, where he gently sings "Fucking in the morning." Classy! Buy it for your parents, they love coffee.

Wildheart by Miguel gets 8 Subtle Lukes out of 10.

Why Make Sense? by Hot Chip. I am including this not just because I really enjoy it, but also as a reminder that I am still a dweeby white guy. I bought this album, and I yeah I really love it, but g.d. if I can think of anything positive to write about it. I even just looked up some other reviews of it just now to help me find things to say, but they were all pretentious bullshit where the authors reflected on middle-age. I'm 19, so that isn't relevant to me or my life, okay?

What I DO want to comment on re: this album, is a song that pops up exactly halfway through. It's nice and slow and soulful, where Alexis Taylor sings about sweetness and romance for about 30 seconds. And then the chorus comes in: "You gave me white WINE and FRIED CHICKEN." Don't get me wrong, if a date involved KFC chips and a nice Sav Blanc I'd be like, "this is grouse," but I wouldn't rush home and write a smooth number about it. Or anything. I don't write music.

Why Make Sense? by Hot Chip gets 7 Non-Ruined Moods of 10.

Impersonator by Majical Cloudz. Bleak af. Makes me feel like shit, one of the songs opens with "Someone died," delicate, grey human misery put to audio. Ten Rothko Paintings Out of Ten.

They were too sad to even make it look nice

I was going to write something about the jamie xx album, because I Love It, but I am going to resist. I think I have been hypnotised by the video for Gosh. It is My Everything, and sometimes I light a candle in a shrine and watch it on repeat. If you haven't watched the video for Gosh, get about it ya dingus.

UNTIL NEXT YEAR TIME, miss u peace out. Buy CDs, they are still the least cool way of listening!

Colours of The Wind

As Grandmother Willow once said, "Listen with your heart, and you will understand." I'd like to think that what the "shady" (get it?) old lady/tree-spirit meant was, "turn it up really loud so that you can feel the bass reverberate in your chest cavity." Have you figured out what this post will be about?

I'm sure there is an intelligent discussion somewhere about how hip-hop has always(?) held status with "othered" cultural minorities, but this is not the blog for intelligent discussion. Have you read any of my other blog posts? I rest my case down on the table and set the air-conditioner to "cold." The case, it is cold. Let it go, #frozen.

To be honest (tbh) I have no claim to be any expert on hip-hop, because just like any other white chump* the only hip-hop I listen to regularly is Drake, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, and Missy Elliott. Sometimes I will play a Tyler the Creator album when I'm really angry/sad/in my regular state of being, because Kill People Burn Shit Fuck School. But, when I have enough wine inside of my nervous system, I CAN and WILL claim to be an expert on queerness. So, I'm 25% qualified to tell you, dear reader, about three really great queer hip-hop songs.

I will preface this by saying that Le1f, the arguable champion of queer hip-hop, is absent. Look, I get it, "Wut" is a catchy song and the video has ~sxc~ guys dancing in Pikachu masks, which is totally my bag, BUT I am just not A Fan. I saw him live once and it didn't even covert me. He has great hair though. I just don't like his mumbles. SORRY 'BOUT IT.

#1 of My Recommended QHH Trax:
WAVVY BY MYKKI BLANCO! Great job Mykki for making the cut I'm so I'm so I'm so proud of u.

I love Mykki, and this song has both copious drug references AND that weird spooky beat thing which seems to be trendy right now. 8 Spooky-Lukeys out of 10.
Also see: "Fuckin' The DJ," "Haze.Boogie.Life.," "Angggry Byrdz

#2. I Run This Club by Cakes Da Killa.
Cakes! What would your mum say if she knew you made my blog! :')

I am a sucker for something I can dance to, PLUS bonus points because almost blatant M.I.A. ripping. A lot of the comments on this video are like, "omg he's got dope rhymez even tho he is a straight-up homo." Don't these people know Who Run The World? Gays. Also, women. ~patriarchal life get out of the way~
Also 8 Cakes out of 10.

#3. House of Ladosha's "B/M/F."
It stands for black model famous! HoL where are u guys???

House of Ladosha were rockin' the femme beard look WAY before Conchita Wurst. I love this song. Where are they now? Idk. Bring Back House of Ladosha. I bought a t-shirt from them once and they included a thank-you note. Sometimes I stare out the window and I think I see House of Ladosha in the distance. But it's just the floaties in my eye.
B/M/F gets 5 Blobs out of 10 (2 blobs docked for confusing medical eye phenomena)

I hope you, Dear Reader, enjoy these songs, and also maintain an awareness that House of Ladosha are literally M.I.A. and not Maya Arulpragasam. As you can hear, Queer Hip-Hop can kick ass, and fuck Macklemore and Ryan Lewis because these fools don't need some white sap to speak for them.

"Like The Legend of The Phoenix" - Pharrelliams Punk, 1986

It's time, you guys. Time for me to Release the Beast and write some bullshit about music I like again. Will Amy make a comeback too? IDK. I'm not her writing impulse and I can't and won't speak for it.

So, anyway. What brought me back to this here magic online space, this Cosmic Foxhole? Björk's Vulnicura aka vulni-CRYING slayed me, for Personal Reasons. The Panda Bear album was also totally grouse, and in 2013 I went nuts for that Andy Stott guy. But, none of them made me feel like I need to revisit the unfortunately-titled "blogspot" spot for blogs. I'm not going to lie, it was g.d. (god damn) Drake "Aubrey Drake" Drake that brought me back. I mean sure. Look dis.
hey gurl
Drake, Dra.k.a. Everyone's Favourite Rapper With Feelings, is pretty maligned I think. Since last posting on this blog (4 years ago!, "oh my god/oh my gosh" - Missy Elliot Quote) I have actually Gotten A Real Job working with The Youth. Did you know The Youth think Drake is lame? They're like "Oh, I'm not into that YOLO HASHTAG SWAG b.s." And I'm like "Excuse me, are we talking about the same doe-eyed sadman? The same guy who made an emotional slow-jam featuring Stevie Wonder???" But, they don't know who that is, or think I'm not being Serious and Sincere, and anyway they're not about to take music suggestions from some old* guy. Fair enough.

Anyway. Drake just opened his boisterous/tender gullet wide and out plopped some brooding "collection" of music which I promptly BuyTunes'd. It is called "If You're Reading This It's Too Late," which is pretty heavy and a total clue as to how happy and carefree the music is. I'm being a liar! For comic effect!! In reality, the album is a dense, slow-burning, Leather-scented candle of pain. On "Energy," the second track on the album, he raps about how a girl wants the password for his wi-fi so she can show him people she "isn't really" friends with on her Facebook timeline. A stunning and insightful comment about popular film "The Social Network," and, I'd like to think, Society. Apparently he has also made some short film or something but I am too busy and important to watch it. The album is great though. My favourite song is possibly "Madonna" because of the way Drake "Drake" Drake mumbles unintelligibly before shouting that I could be big as Madonna, a popular songstress/religious icon. 9 Lukes out of 10.

Next time on The Cosmic Foxhole: I have no idea.

*Dear Youth: I don't like it when you say "Oh I thought you were in your thirties!" when I tell you how old I am.

Twenny Legz pt. Deux!

Kay so I tried to make my list a tad different to Luke's just so they're not all the same tracks. Even tho it was a bit of a slack year music-wise, there's some good'uns in here, so enjoy!

Great job, 2011!

25. Oliver Tank – Last Night I Heard Everything in Slow Motion

24. Gotye – Eyes Wide Open

23. Azealia Banks - 212

22. Memory Tapes – Today is our Life

21. M83 – Midnight City

20. Clams Casino – I’m God

19. Beirut – Santa Fe

18. Deerhoof – The Merry Barracks

17. The Weeknd – Wicked Games

16. Lana Del Rey – Video Games

15. Stolen Thong – Burial vs Sisqo

14. Ghoul – Good Loops

13. Panda Bear – Surfer’s Hymn

12. The Throne – Niggas in Paris

11. Gang Gang Dance - Mindkilla

10. The Middle East – Land of the Bloody Unknown

While everyone was busy kissing Bon Iver’s (presumably) hairy buttocks all year, we had a perfectly amazing soft-rock/folk band here in Aus that occasionally shits all over that guy. Their album this year didn’t hit as hard as I thought it would, and the show I saw them do here in town was decidedly average (THEY DIDN’T PLAY BLOOD??!). But they’re still far and away the best thing this shit hole of a town has ever produced. Miss u Middle East :’(

9. Architecture in Helsinki – I Know Deep Down

If push came to shove, these dudes are my fave Australian band. My favourite chorus on an album full of amazingly satisfying hooks.

8. Wavves – Bug

Luv u ~~~wavvy bro~~~ I like this song a lot because I know a lot of people who fit the description of the titular ‘Bug’ in this song i.e. dickheads

7. Tyler, the Creator – Yonkers

Oh man, remember February/March ’11?? I was OBSESSED with Tyler, as was much of the hipster internet sphere. By the time Goblin came out I was decidedly tired of the whole schtick, especially the gay slurs/women hating etc. Anyway, I still adore this song. The beat is immense, the lyrics are pretty great and it still sounds so exciting to me.

6. Frank Ocean – Richest Man in the Room

Although my love affair with Odd Future may have waned to the point of being non-existent, I still have a major, MAJOR girl boner for Frank Ocean. R&B was pretty much my jam all year, and this dude has been my most constant source all throughout 2011. Luke stole the song that I liked the most of his, but this is a close runner up anyway.

5. Wild Flag – Future Crimes

Maybe it helps that I have a crush on pretty much everyone in Wild Flag, but this is one of my fave releases of this year. I miss Sleater-Kinney so much, especially because I didn’t listen to them at the height of their fame/success. I guess this is the closest I’ll ever get to a revival, at least for a few years :(

4. Battles – Ice Cream

This song is so insanely funky. It’s hard to dance to and I look like a bit of a spaz when I attempt to but i CAN’T. STOP. Battles fucking rule.

3. Drake – Dreams Money Can Buy

Why this wasn’t on Take Care is just so far beyond me… I don’t even. This is close to Drake’s best song and he didn’t think it was good enough to be on his new album?? What a stupid CUNT. Anyways, I know this entire song off by heart, and will gladly recite it to you upon request. So many good lines, from the first ‘don’t fuck with me’ onwards. So much luv.

2. The Rapture – How Deep is Your Love?

I remember when this song first came out I was saying TRACK OF THE YURR and creaming all over the place. I have calmed down since, but only slightly. The Rapture have always been a SORT OF OKAY band, but they just hit this song so far out of the park it’s crazy. They may have ripped off Sisqo in the process (let me see/hear that thoooooong/soooooooong) but if you’re gonna rip off someone it might as well be him.

1. Burial, Four Tet & Thom Yorke - Ego

Burial, Thom Yorke & Four Tet. About to fuck some shit up.

I almost forgot about this song, but it is so brilliant it HAS to be my top song of the year. Burial and Four Tet’s beat is dope as hell and Thom Yorke is excellent here at doing that thing that Thom Yorke does. The lyrics are also brilliant and the whole production/vocal delivery has an air of cynicism and sarcasm and paranoia and that’s mostly why it’s my fave song of the year. I can sooOoOooOO relate. That and I have never/will never dislike anything Burial does I am such a pathetic fangirl.

Twenny Legz

Oh hi, blog. I did not hit her, etc. It's been a while. I guess 2011, to me, has been kind of average, music-wise. There's been lots of anticipation for big-name releases (Radiohead! Panda Bear! Death Cab! Drake!) all of which have been kind of.. I don't know. Nothing from this year has really had staying power, for me.
Having said that though, I found myself halfway through the list of tracks for voting in Triple J's Hottest 100 and saw that I had over 20 songs shortlisted (for a possible 10 to vote for). So, maybe there have been some killer tracks this year at least.
Here are my "top 25" I suppose! Relevant (p.s. read Natalie Dee, it is a great thing to read):

25. Limit To Your Love by James Blake.
24. Reach a Bit Further by Wild Beasts
23. The Words That Maketh Murder by PJ Harvey
22. Wake Me When It's Over by Terius Nash (The-Dream)
21. No Church in The Wild by The Throne ft. Frank Ocean
20. The Bay by Metronomy.
19. Nightcall by Kavinsky and Lovefoxxx
18. You Da One by Rihanna
17. City Grrl by C.S.S.
16. Countdown by Beyonce
15. Stolen Thong, a mashup of Stolen Dog by Burial and Thong Song by Sisqo
14. Far Nearer by Jamie xx
13. Time of My Life by Patrick Wolf
12. How Deep Is Your Love? by The Rapture
11. Take Care by Drake ft. Rihanna

10. Contact High by Architecture in Helsinki.
Pop song brilliance etc. Probably the greatest pop chorus I've heard in a long time.

09. The Morning by The Weeknd.
This is my favourite Weeknd song. (Someone pointed out to me that perhaps it is pronounced "ween'd" as in a silent k and now I can't get that out of my head.) Anyway. The Morning is smooth as hell and catchy and makes you feel cool. It makes you feel good about being hungover, if you ever are.

08. Rano Pano by Mogwai.
Big. The best tune on their pretty good album from this year.

07. Nasty by Spank Rock ft. Big Freedia.
Big Freedia is part of some underground gay dance/hip hop trend thing which I don't know about but is amazing. This is like everything a Spank Rock song needs to be. Perfect beats and dirty lyrics.

06. Alsatian Darn by Panda Bear.
FEELINGS. Also, I am an insatiable Panda Bear fanboiiii

05. Midnight City by M83.
Saxophone solo. Nothing to fault here. Would probably get the top spot if there weren't other songs I personally like more. Har har har.

04. 212 by Azealia Banks.
Insanely good. Did I mention that the white guy can get it? I heard a radio edit of this song and it was pretty atrocious. Like. Okay I get that there is swearing in it but censorship of this song is useless just play the C Word All Round The World.

03. Only Girl (In The World) by Xiu Xiu.
I don't have anything to say here. Have you heard it? I should mention that tracks with some sort of Rihanna association have shown up in my list no less than 3 times. Great job, Rihanna!

02. It's Real by Real Estate.
It's alllll in that otherworldly "Oh~~~."

01. Thinking About You by Frank Ocean.
This song is incredible. Frank Ocean & his album are incredible. This song pretty much sums up my taste in music for the year, and it's great, so it's #1 on my list. Congratulations Frank Ocean ya dingus.

Some of the songs that I have rated "5 Stars" in iTunes

It's worth pointing out that I have never used the star rating system in iTunes very seriously. I'd say 90% of my library is unrated. Regardless, here is a small selection of some of songs which have somehow inspired me to click on that 5th little star. A small selection, or else this would just be a huge list of Panda Bear, Sunset Rubdown, Owen Pallett and Sam Amidon songs.

- Walkabout ft. Noah Lennox by Atlas Sound
Bradford Cox AND Panda Bear, on one song. Sometimes collaborations are better in name than in sound, but this is one of the best things I have ever heard. What did you want to see, what did you want to be when you grew up? A: TO GO AWAY AND NOT LOOK BACK

- Lust for Life by Girls
The amount of times that the line "I wish I had a pizza and a bottle of wine" has popped in to my head is countless. Also, any song that opens with "I wish I had a boyfriend, I wish had a loving man in my life" has won my heart from the get-go. It's also worth noting that there is an x-rated version of this music video which features a man singing to a penis like it's a microphone.

- We Were Born The Mutants Again With Leafling by of Montreal
I don't really know why I love this song so much. It could be the way it makes me feel like Nothing Really Matters, or the driving beat, or the excellent summary it provides for the excellent album which came before it.

- Little Bit by Lykke Li
Basically the perfect pop song. Now she has lyrics that are all "I am a prostitute, you gon' get some." :(

- Back in the Game by Jamie T
Take your brother, down to the sea, ...

techre it up

Autechre recently released an anthology collection type thing of all of their EPs from 1991 through to 2002 and so I have been working through those and also visiting OL' FAVOURITES.

For those of y'all unfamiliar with Autechre (apparently pronounced however you like, I go for "or-tekker") they are a couple of dudes who make music that basically sounds like a spaceship. Foreals. This is one of the highlights of the bajillion tracks on the anthology so far, listen to it and you will understand what I mean with my spaceship comment:

THAT'S FROM 1997. This piece of high-tech song was made when Hanson' Mmm-bop was in the charts. Basically since then Autechre have abandoned melody/earth/rhythm at all and started making stuff that sounds like this:

I kind of imagine that "Fol3" is what a semi-underwater transformer battle would sound like. Bad. Ass. The warpy noise introduced at about 33 seconds is incredible. SWOON.
However, I understand that random electronic/robot noises aren't really everyone's anyone's cup of tea so for you who have the Noise Fear, stick to the earlier albums. Incunabula, Amber and especially Tri Repetae have amazing sounds without losing the concept of beat. In my opinion the least friendly albums are Confield and Draft 7.30... It's good to note that with their last couple of albums they are 'bringing it back' to some straightforward roots. Check out latest album Oversteps compared to recent Untilted for example.

ALSO WORTH NOTING are Autechre's album covers. THEY ARE AMAZING.:

SO ANYWAY. If you have patience and a know when to pay attention when something is Important I recommend checking out Autechre's EP anthology. If you're completely new however, start with the album Tri Repetae. Eventually you, like me, will enjoy Autechre, and potentially become a robot. Or at least a person who is appreciative of random noises.

Autechre's EP Anthology 1991-2002 gets 7 Lukes out of 10!

Cloud Somethins

Jay Reatard may have passed away, but if you're longing for the kind of upbeat pop-punk he crafted, look no further than probably-huge-but-I-don't-realise-it band Cloud Nothings.
I only just managed to get around to listening to their album and I'm already addicted to this shit. Me to the Cloud Nothings album is like a guinea pig to it's hiding place- frequently there, if not, eating or something.Poor analogy.
Whatevs.

~~~I dun have a hartbeat~~~ - Cloud Nothings "glasses" dude
If you were a fish, this album would be perfect for those times that you expertly maneuvre through a small hole in a log, or the 30 second frenzy after you get fed 7-8 pellets of fish food. It's that good! ANIMALS.
If you don't have pet fish, I totally recommend it. One is called John West a la popular tuna brand, the other is called Charles. because Freddy Ruppert suggested it, and if Freddy Ruppert suggests something to you, just do it. Unless he encourages you to murder someone, or something else illegal. This seems unlikely, he is a pretty good guy.
Uhhh. So yeah, Cloud Nothings. Turn it on and turn your brain off and listen to it on repeat a lot.
Cloud Nothing's self titled album gets 7 Lukes out of 10
ALSO GOOD THINGS THAT YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO THAT I MAY/MAY NOT/Probably won't REVIEW AT A LATER DATE:
PJ Harvey's "Let England Shake"
Tapes 'n Tapes' "Outside"
Young Galaxy's "Shapeshifting"
zzz-onoscope
Imagine the sound of that epic waterfall! You'd imagine it to be all like
fshhhhhhhhhhhh~~~~
INSTEAD IT IS ACTUALLY
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZ (sleeping sound)
Album cover: 7 Lukes out of 10
Music: 3 Lukes out of 10
Snooooozer. Although, now that I think about it, I might not even like Cut Copy that much. I know I recently wrote something like "who doesn't like Cut Copy?" but I probably should have said "who didn't sort of dig their first album/that song Hearts on Fire?"
In other news, Mogwai's new album is called "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will." Which is so excellent. Like the music almost definitely will be. (Although the reviews I read of their last also-excellently-titled album "The Hawk is Howling" weren't that great, I LOVED IT and much preferred it over the prior "Mr. Beast.") And have you SEEN the fucking album cover for The Hawk is Howling? Holy shit. In terms of superficial qualities an album can have, Mogwai really nailed it with The Hawk is Howling. THERE IS EVEN A TRACK TITLED "YOU ARE JIM MORRISON, YOU ARE DEAD."
~~I'M A FUCKING HOWLING HAWK AND I AM GOING TO FUCKING PECK YR EYES OUT FUUUUUUUUCK *piercing gaze*~~ - mogwai/the hawk whom howls
THERE ARE A LOT OF COMPONENTS TO A GREAT ALBUM YOU GUYS, and I do like to ponder on the superficial elements (i.e. titles/album art.) I'm pretty sure that is the greatest hawk portrait ever used as an album cover, and I know a lot of them. What can I say? I am weak to intense animal portraits!
I once saw Mogwai, it was a sensory overload and totally fantastic. I really liked it at the end of the show how I kind of felt nauseous! I recommend going to a concert venue to see them if you ever get the chance.
Super Request with Rosie Beat-her-head-in
Sup, again
Since my holidays consists of rain, playing pokemon, hoarding things, losing things, and playing "world of warcraft" (see: i am a loser) i decided that two blog posts in x amount of days is Totally Ok.
HERE IS, A 'short' list of "albums I look forward to in 2011." In no particular order.
- Hercules and Love Affair. Uhhh there is a video for the first single on the interwebs somewhere and it's pretty much regular faire for hercs, which is Good With Me. DISCO DISCO. Qs regarding hercy: is "Hercules and Love Affair" the most homo-sounding band name in existence? Is "hercules and love affair" THE most "homo" band name in existence? Disco disco?
~~~~~~~??????
- Patrick Wolf. If you follow patrick wolf on twitter you would have treated with this gem:

Hes engaged! To be maRried!!!!! KrAzY!!!!
Apparently no one else finds this as amusing as I do, which only disappoints me, 24 hours a day, 364 days a year (I have A Birthday, you guys.) The little symbol in the top left of the tweet means that I favourited it AND retweeted it. THAT'S THE MOST LOVE YOU CAN POSSIBLY SHOW A TWEET.Anyway, his album is apparently going to be called "Lupercalia," which is the best possible album title for someone named Patrick Wolf. And it will probably be ridiculous. YES.

- PJ Harvey. Her album coming out is called "Let England Shake." Remember back in ___ber (name of month) that the weird song leaked with her wearing a batshit-crazy hat on TV and strumming on an autoharp which was totally out of tune with the "Take me back to Constantinople!" sample playing? What. The fuck. This album will blow chunks/be amazing.
I actually found an image of that what-the-fuck moment as described above:

"~~i'm peejay and i'm jus belting shit out regardless of anything ever POTATOES~~"

MEN. Because I find JD Samson oddly attractive. I say oddly because she is a woman with a moustache.
Lupe Fiasco. His album is going to be called LASERS or L.A.S.E.R.S or some shit. I don't know. I love him. Have you listened to The Cool? It's so cool. Also anyone that knows me in real life will vouch for my ability to swoon over lasers. Seriously. Sometimes people take photos of lasers and tag me in them on Facebook.

Cut Copy. DOES ANYONE NOT LIKE CUT COPY? SRSLY.
The Streets. I think I have a crush on Mike Skinner even though he is kind of gross. Also I don't mind the newer "omg I have feelings" Streets albums over the "omg I'm so english!!!11 chips" older Streets albums. And the new one has the word "Blues" in the title, so it's going to have soooo many feelings.

~~~~~~---- The following are ones that I don't actually think are confirmed to have albums coming out:
Bjork. Apparently there is a Bjork album coming out this year. But, like Radiohead, I think 'they' say there is a Bjork album coming out every year. Nonetheless, if a Bjork album DOES come out this year, I'm on it. I'll learn all the not-great-english lyrics and wail along like a, uh, minnow.
"~~~i am bjork soh-reee i did-uh ze sneezingks~~~"
Aphex Twin. Apparently in an interview he said he had made like six million albums. I don't know why I am including him on this list, I am kind of "over him" and don't really like his stuff apart from the selected ambient works collections??? What??? UHH
Japandroids. For some reason I suspect these bros will release something in 2011. Call me psychic, or call it "band-wanting-to-remain-profitable." WHATEVS. Remember how great Post-Nothing was :'(
Any of the 5038 bands featuring Spencer Krug.
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness. This band basically don't exist and just put out one album ever and I am so confused about anything related to them ever. BUT they have totally awesome songs on that album. Also, the worst band name ever.
I can't even remember what that album came out. SIGHS. DISAPPEARING BANDS, WHERE ARE YOU, MISS U
I'm going to leave it at that. Appaz we have probs with people commenting :'( soz. I don't know how to fix it. You can tweet at me or something.
nu year ramblings
It's twenny elev yo.
Eleven is a totally spiritual and mystical number. Here are some facts from wikipedia:
-The number eleven is important in numerology, as it is the first of the Master Numbers.
-In Basque, hamaika ("eleven") has the double meaning of "infinite", probably from amaigabe, "endless", as in Hamaika aldiz etortzeko esan dizut! ("I told you infinite/eleven times to come!").
-American Airlines flight 11, a Boston-Los Angeles flight which crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center after being hijacked by terrorists in New York City, New York on September 11, 2001.
-Ocean's Eleven is the name of two American films.
I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT ONE ABOUT AMERICAN FILMS
MIND
BLOWING
STUFF.
Also, it's like that Why? song where he's all "the clock's always tellin' 11:11 or 3:something"
I am jus glad it's 2011 because 2010 was totally shit.
LISTEN TO THESE Y'ALL:
1. Kelis: Flesh Tone. Not to be confused with flesh light. GROSS.
Kelis goes all "club diva" and drops a pop album I managed to somehow overlook until the end of 2010. I don't even know when this came out what. Think of all those shitty David Guetta/Kelly Rowlands "club jams" and remove the shitty, annoying repetition, add some serious euro inspiration, Kelis' sassy pipes and some KILLER choruses to get FLESH TONE, a totally killer pop album. I'm not sure how this got swept under the rug. ON PAR WITH BODY TALK IMO.
2. VICKI LEEKX
Appaz M.I.A. jus dropped a free mixtape/album whenevs. You can get it hurr. And you should. It's probably better than /\/\ /\ Y /\, or at least it's more fun to listen to. And it doesn't have Teqkilla on it. Also it has less-serious M.I.A. that we haven't seen for a while! And it's FREE. Winnings, all round. I'ma listen to it RIGHT NOW. the world th-th-the world
3. DFA
That's right. I'm advising you to listen to an ENTIRE RECORD LABEL'S OUTPUT. jus' kiddin'. Well, only a little. Every act* on DFA is totally solid. *I haven't listened to all of them. But they probably are. DFA artists you have probably heard of and love: LCD Soundsystem, The Juan MacLean, The Rapture, Hercules and Love Affair, YACHT, Hot Chip(!). I'm super psyched for the upcoming Hercules and Love Affair record. BUT the reason I put this here is because for a couple days I was hooked on the DFA 2010 compilation and also the "DFA gets cheap with bleep" compilation. Both are totally winner and I heartily recommend if you like funky beats/disco/music at all. This one was flogged in the early hours of January 1:
So. Fantastic. u doin alrite? yeeeeah we're doin alrite
CAN YOU LISTEN TO THIS WITHOUT TAPPING YR FOOT LIKE AN ASSHOLE
Things I am looking forward to:
1. 2011 not being as shitty as 2010
2. Seeing SUFJAN AND OWEN PALLETT IN THE SPACE OF 5 DAYS *death*
3. LANEWAY FESTIVAL
hope erryone reading had a nice new year etc.
all the best
